Deriving from sar - troublesome and stan - stone
A game about stones big and small -
For 3-4 players
Not far to the East of Avebury, where an ancient complex of standing stones are arranged in circles and avenues of lost meaning, there is a place named the Valley of Stones.
It is from this valley that the stones that form Avebury and many of the other menhirs and monuments that dot the surrounding hills were taken. Among these chosen stones are The Devil’s Den - a dolmen burial chamber; The Polisher - a stone with deep grooves from the repeated sharpening of stone axes; and the Toadstone - a large sarsen standing on the edge of the valley with a strong resemblance to an amphibian.
Did our Neolithic ancestors pass through this valley and give meaning to these stones, acting as ancient artists and curators, moving them to be displayed on hills and in circles?
Did they choose some to represent gods, with blessings and sacrifice demanded at their base?
Can we imagine their feeling of satisfaction at finding a perfect stone to shape into an axehead? At their feeling of relief at the sighting of a familiar menhir just as the late summer’s light began to fade, guiding them home?
This game is a still a work in progress. Any feedback, particularly on balance and rules queries would be greatly appreciated.
